What is Imago Relationship Therapy?
Imago Relationship Therapy is a theory and practise of couplehood, integrating well established psychological theories & practical observations, which has evolved and developed over three decades. It is an approach to working with couples, helping them to deepen and transform their relationship.
Through Imago you will learn: why you picked your partner; that there is purpose to relationship conflict; that there is purpose to the initial attraction of Romantic Love; that the relationship becomes the centre, rather than each partner struggling to position themselves as centre; that differences offer possibility of growth; how to create a vision for your relationship; what each partner needs in order to feel loved and cared for; how to integrate positive behaviours back into your relationship.

“Imago theory offers a new definition of couplehood, based on collaboration, understanding, equality and safety” Harville Hendrix & Helen LaKelly Hunt.
Imago theory is based on the work of Harville Hendrix, PH.D and Helen LaKelly Hunt, PH.D, and was first published in the best seller ‘Getting the love you want: A Guide for Couples” by Harville Hendrix, which has sold over 2 million copies around the world and translated in 50 languages. Imago theory is based on the relational paradigm, which embraces the two separate and unique individuals while honouring the connection of the relationship.
The Imago Dialogue
In Imago, effective communication is considered crucial to unlocking deeper connections. The Imago Dialogue is an intentional, structured communication technique, which is the foundational skill in Imago Relationship Therapy. Through the three-step process of the Imago Dialogue, couples learn how to communicate effectively, create safety for each partner, remove defensive responses, develop empathy, deepen their connection, and transform their relationship.
Although Imago Relationship Therapy evolved as a theory and practise of marriage and couplehood, it can be successfully applied to other contexts, such as parent-child relationships, gay/lesbian relationships, friendships, and business relationships. Imago processes can be applied between two people or in group contexts.
